The architect John Pritchard designed the Old Probate Registry, which was built in 1857. Pritchard, the restorer of the Cathedral, made a considerable contribution to secular building in Llandaff.
The Old Probate Registry is considered a beautiful example of Victorian design at its best although not at its most exotic. Although, a very simple building, displaying a flat facade to the road, the Registry is an object lesson in the harmonious use of materials (a smooth faced ashlar, a rough sandstone and grey-green slate), and the careful composition and subtle arrangement of the different elements to produce an eye-catching yet superbly refined building.
Only two types of window are used a square head on the lower floor and a pointed head on the upper floor and these two are arranged in series of couplets and triplets. The junction between the two parts of the building is neatly marked with a tall gabled porch with pointed arch and stubby columns while the long two-storey section is given added interest by the addition of a shapely chimney.
