....Off the Wall, the gallery for contemporary art is pleased to announce that the next exhibition will be a combined show of mother & daughter, Suzanne and Julia Brooker who share a love of colour. Their beautiful paintings on paper and aluminium glow with sensuous beauty. Their unashamed pleasure is there for us all to enjoy.
Since graduating with a 1st class degree in Fine Art Painting in 2000 Julia has gained an international following.
Based in Cardiff, she is renowned for her beautiful abstract paintings. She has exhibited in London, Stuttgart, Moscow, Hong Kong, New York, & Buenos Aires.
Her work is in private and corporate collections including: GlaxoSmithKline, BP and Johnson & Johnson.
Julia creates elegant contemporary paintings, in which the colours of nature and light are captured on a reflective aluminium surface. Julia manipulates the flow of paint, whilst simultaneously marking, lining and detailing, so that the paint takes on a character, either; veiled, sensual and oscillating, or linear and graphic.
The new series has instant appeal, the ´quick hit´ of vivid jewel like colours and others, which are quiet more subtle dark paintings. When the viewer gets close she hopes they will enjoy the tiny accidental droplets that fall, the ´hand-madness´ of the paintings. Closeness should offer up more, a desire to touch the surface, “stillness”.
Suzanne Brooker was born in and spent her childhood in Penmaenmawr in North Wales, which is perched between the sea and the mountains. Landscape, seascape and the colours and textures of the natural world have always been her inspiration.
She responds to the immediacy of the colours and materials she is working with. Her excitement in her work is apparent in her unashamed exploration of the pleasures of colour.
The show launches on Thursday July 9th 2009 with a private viewing, 6-8pm, and lasts until August 12th.
Readers are exclusively invited to a Private View on Thursday 9th June 2009, 6-8pm to include cocktails and meet Julia and Suzanne Brooker. This offer is on a first come first serve basis, or alternatively the exhibition opens to the general public on Friday 10th July until August 12th.

Suzanne Brooker (nee Roberts)
The early deaths of her mother, father and brother when she was 11, forced Suzanne and her sisters to move England to live with their Aunt Gladys. Three years later, she started her first job in the Drawing Office of an engineering factory. “I was so naive I had not realised that I would be drawing nuts and bolts. When no-one was looking I would draw trees and when the boss came round, I would hide them with my arm.”
Suzanne married in 1951. Watercolour and painting were squeezed around a hectic family life with four children. When her children were adults, Suzanne studied for two Art A levels. Her design for a stained glass panel was installed in Yeovil Hospital and her collages have been published by Dickinsons and Marks & Spencer. Later she celebrated her 70th birthday whilst being the eldest student on her Art Foundation course.
