Richard Davidson paints images of objects (often items of clothing) on isolated, unadorned grounds. The images he works with often recall his prior career as a lawyer in the City of London-formal polished shoes; ties; shirts and suits. There is an element of reflective nostalgia. They are painted with a sense of affection whilst, at the same time, they are designed to bring into play for the viewer issues such as loss of identity, uniformity (and clothes as uniform) and containment. Richard hope’s, however, that each viewer will bring their own associations with them when viewing these images of ordinary items.
Formerly a city solicitor, Davidson is a graduate of Wimbledon School of Art, has had many group and solo shows, and won the BHF Bank small painting competition in 1998.
