Born in Wales, James studied at Cardiff College of Art from 1957-1962. In 1967 he moved with his family to Cornwall where he continued to teach and paint. In 1972 he was appointed as the Head of Creative Studies at Bodmin Community College where he worked until retiring.
He has regularly exhibited in a number of galleries in England and Wales and has had numerous commissions from both private clients and national companies.
